Canine Running BuddiesTM Program

Frequently Asked Questions

Our Running BuddiesTM Program provides orphaned dogs the exercise they crave while waiting to find permanent, loving homes. Thanks to the Richmond SPCA's Running BuddiesTM volunteers, dogs have an outlet for their energy!

  1. How do I join?
You must be a current, active volunteer with the Richmond SPCA and have taken the Dog Handling class. Please click here to go to the Running Buddies TM calendar. Each run, unless otherwise specified, is 3.1 miles on mostly sidewalks and roads. Click here to view the route.
  2. Are there any requirements to be a Running BuddiesTM Volunteer?
Running Buddies™ participation requires the successful completion of a New Volunteer Information Session, as well as any required classes to obtain active volunteer status at the Richmond SPCA. Additionally, active Richmond SPCA volunteers interested in participating in this program must complete a Dog Handling class. Click here to sign up. Participants must also be 18 years of age or older.
  3. How often are the runs?
Each month varies so check the calendar often. There are usually after work walks/runs on Wednesdays and regular Saturday and Sunday morning runs/walks.
  4. I don’t run, but still like the idea, what can I do to help?
    Walkers are welcome too!
  5. Where does everyone meet?
Please park in the second parking lot and take the stairs to the main floor (go up one flight of stairs or press “1” on the elevator). Meet in front of the double doors that lead to the kennel area.  Please check in with the Running Buddies TM Coordinator for the day with any questions or for help choosing a dog.
  6. What is the weather cancellation policy?
Walks/runs will be cancelled in the following conditions: ice on the roads, lightening, heavy storms and/or temperatures over 89 degrees. It is the responsibility of the volunteer to check the weather before coming for a walk/run as we are not always able to contact all participants in the event a session has been cancelled. To keep things consistent, we determine the forecast based on the conditions The Weather Channel reports (zip code: 23220).
  7. Still have questions?
If you need any assistance with volunteer matters, please contact Coordinator of Volunteers and Programs Michelle Russell or Volunteer and Programs Assistant Wilson Nelms. You may also call the volunteer office at 804-521-1329. Running Buddies™ is coordinated by our Behavior and Training Specialists, Jackie Laubacher and Jessica Bristow
