Behavior and Training Associate - School for Dogs

Part-time position
Hours: 20 hours/week

We are seeking a skilled, motivated and dependable individual to join our training team at the Richmond SPCA School for Dogs.

The ideal candidate would have previous experience training dogs using reward-based training methods. They must excel at working with people and pets, and have the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Knowledge of learning theory, clicker training, agility, tricks, competition obedience and/or behavior modifications is a plus.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Performing daily training and enrichment sessions using reward-based methods
  • Providing superior customer service
  • Building and maintaining relationships with clients (both humans and dogs)
  • Working as a team to help pet parents set achievable training goals for their dogs
  • Writing daily report cards and sending them to parents- updating them on training sessions and providing information to continue that training at home (including creating individualized training videos)
  • Completing daily housekeeping tasks such as laundry, sweeping, washing dishes, mopping, etc.
  • Assisting with training volunteers as needed
Requirements Include:
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Daytime availability
  • Reliable transportation
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Basic computer skills (Word, MS Outlook)
  • Frequent standing, occasional kneeling, stooping, using stairs, reaching, pulling and lifting weights up to approximately 50 pounds
  • Ability to safely walk and handle large dogs, including during inclement weather

Client Services Representative

Part-time position
Hours: approximately 20 hours per week (early morning and evening availability required)
Rate: $10 per hour

The Richmond SPCA is seeking a part-time Client Services Representative to work in our full-service Susan M. Markel Veterinary Hospital. This is a great opportunity to join this established, well recognized private no-kill humane society.

Requirements include:

  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task, take and follow directions, adapt and accommodate changing demands and make appropriate prioritization decisions
  • Strong computer skills and ability to learn new computer systems quickly. Knowledge of Avimark a plus
  • General cleaning, restocking and upkeep of work space: sweeping, dusting, mopping, taking out the trash and restocking supplies and maintenance of existing organizational systems
  • Comfortable handling/learning to handle both dogs and cats – general handling (leash-walking, lifting and carrying), and, placing animals in cages/carriers
  • Ability to perform occasional kneeling, stooping, reaching, pulling and lifting weights up to about 50 lbs
  • Position responsibilities include, but are not limited to, client communications, data entry, answering multiple phones lines, updating medical charts, filing, scheduling appointments, client education, and handling money
  • Experience working in the veterinary field strongly preferred
  • Early morning and evening availability required
