Seniors for Seniors

Did you know physical contact with pets lowers stress and blood pressure levels and combats depression, and that increased activity from playing with pets can reduce bone loss, lower cholesterol and improve blood circulation?

We do! And we’re delivering all of these benefits and more to seniors (age 60 and up) who adopt a senior pet (age 5 and up) through our special Seniors for Seniors adoption program! Read more about the health benefits associated with pet companionship.

Benefits of the program include:

  • Personalized assistance from Richmond SPCA adoption staff in finding a senior cat or dog who fits the adopter’s home and lifestyle
  • For cats: a free starter kit (which includes a litter box, food and water bowl, a litter scoop, a toy, and litter liner bags) and a cardboard scratcher
  • For dogs: a free leash and collar, food and water bowl and a toy
  • Reduced adoption fee of $50

Senior adopters are encouraged to visit or contact our adoption center at 804-521-1307. Our experienced and knowledgeable adoption counselors will be happy to assist you in finding the perfect cat or dog for your lifestyle and can answer any questions you may have related to this program. Thank you for opening your heart and home to a senior pet in need of your love and attention!

The reduced adoption fees and starter kits provided to Seniors for Seniors adopters are made possible by a grant from a generous donor who inspired the introduction of this program for cats in March of 2008 and its expansion to include dogs in December of 2009.
