RICHMOND SPCA GREEN TEAM

What is the Green Team?

Green Team members are Richmond SPCA volunteers who go through special training on dog behavior, canine communication (body language) and reward-based training methods. After completing their training, members of the Green Team are given additional responsibilities and privileges with regard to the animals in our care. They focus on teaching dogs skills that will aid in their adoption, as well as providing crucial physical exercise and mental stimulation. Due to the hard work and special attention provided by our dedicated Green Team, we are able to greatly improve the quality of our shelter dogs’ lives while they await adoption and help them find loving homes faster.

Members of the Green Team must be 18 or older, are required to volunteer a minimum of 6 hours per month, with at least one hour per week of that time spent doing Green Team-specific activities. Green Team members are offered continuing education through educational films and additional hands-on experience.

How do I join?

What is Pet University?

Pet University consists of classes for current and active Richmond SPCA volunteers who want to become members of the Green Team. These classes are offered to our volunteers at no cost. All classes must be attended in order to become a member of the Green Team, and no make-up classes will be offered.

Classes will cover dog body language, learning theory, behavioral tool box and common behavior problems seen in shelters. Once volunteers have completed
Pet University, they will be provided with additional hands-on training to hone their skills and better understand the animals in our care.

Who may I contact with questions?

If you’d like more information about Pet University or becoming a member of the Green Team please contact Jackie Laubacher, Senior Behavior & Training Specialist, by telephone at 804-521-1337 or by email
