About Our Clinic

Spaying and neutering dogs and cats prevents reproduction and not only reduces the homeless pet population, it also creates healthier, safer communities and better behaved pets! Dogs and cats may be safely spayed or neutered once they reach two pounds or two months, whichever is greater. During surgery your pet will be fully anesthetized and will not feel any pain. As with any surgery there may be some discomfort associated with the procedure post operatively but this is kept to a minimum through the use of pain medications.

In 2004 we raised funds for and pledged to provide high-volume, affordable spay/neuter services for the Greater Richmond community for a period of three years in our clinic. Six years later, we have performed more than 75,000 free and low-cost surgeries! If you would like to make a donation to support our clinic, please click here.

Feral Cat Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR)

To prevent feral (unsocialized) cat colonies from continuing to multiply, the Richmond SPCA offers free spay/neuter surgery, rabies vaccination and Ivomec injection (deworming) for feral cats within our defined free service area, which includes the City of Richmond and the counties of Chesterfield, Goochland, Hanover and Henrico. For feral cats outside of the Greater Richmond area, there is a $40 charge per cat of either gender, which includes surgery, rabies vaccination and Ivomec injection (deworming).

If you are interesting in doing Trap-Neuter-Return for feral cats to be spayed or neutered through our clinic then please call 521-1300.

We rent humane cat traps for the purposes of Trap-Neuter-Return. Please let us know that you need a trap(s) when you make your appointment with our clinic. There is a $50 deposit to be paid at the time of rental, which is returned to you when the trap is returned in working order, within 3 months of the trap rental. Trap reservations are required as we have a limited supply available. Please note that the sterilized and vaccinated feral cats will need to be returned to their current habitat (where you trapped them) to live out their natural lifespan.

The Richmond SPCA offers a 3-year rabies booster vaccine for feral cats who have already been ear tipped (indicating spay/neuter). Feral caretakers residing within our service area may bring a trapped, ear tipped cat to our clinic between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, to receive the booster. Calling (804) 521-1320 in advance of your arrival is appreciated.
