MEET YOUR MATCH™ AT THE RICHMOND SPCA

Every time you adopt a pet from the Richmond SPCA, you enable us to save the life of another orphaned animal in great need, and finding a great companion has never been easier! Not only do you save a life by adopting a homeless pet, their companionship may even improve your health. Read more about the health benefits associated with pet ownership.

Adoption Process:
When you arrive at the Richmond SPCA, you'll be asked to fill out an Adopter Survey. This one-page survey gathers information about your expectations of pet ownership and helps us determine which animals might best suit your lifestyle. Based on the results of the survey, you'll receive a color-coded Guest Pass to help guide you to cats or dogs that best meet your expectations. Take the interactive online Meet Your Match Survey.

Please Bring:

  • Picture ID with your current address (if current address not available, please bring current utility bill)
  • Proof of age (you must be 18 or older to adopt a pet from the Richmond SPCA)
  • Proper form of payment (cash, credit/debit card, money order, Richmond SPCA gift card). Checks are not an accepted form of payment.
  • A carrier for your adopted kitty or a leash and collar for your adopted dog. These and many more wonderful items for your new pet may also be purchased in our gift shop.

Adoption Fee:
$95 per dog or cat of any age. Adoption fee includes spay or neuter procedure, age-appropriate vaccinations, free behavior helpline support, a packet of valuable discount coupons and special offers, and more! In addition, all pets adopted from the Richmond SPCA will be microchipped prior to adoption. A microchip is inserted under your pet's skin and serves as a permanent form of identification. Registration with 24PetWatch is included.

Adoption Holds:
A $20 deposit is required for holds placed on pets. If the hold results in an adoption, the deposit is applied to the adoption fee, otherwise, the deposit is non-refundable and treated as a donation. A 24-hour hold can be placed on adult pets to allow for pet-to-pet introductions or to allow another household member to meet the pet.

Adoption Hours:
Our adoption center is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday. Click here for directions to our center. We also have cats available for adoption at two Richmond-area PETCO locations (Short Pump and Staples Mill locations) and host mobile adoption events at locations throughout the Greater Richmond area.
